Senator Harris Statement on Coast Guard Authorization Act
WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris released the following statement today on her vote against the Coast Guard Authorization Act:
"The United States Coast Guard is vital to the security of our nation but is too often under-appreciated and underfunded. In spite of these obstacles, the men and women of the Coast Guard work tirelessly – each and every day – to protect Americans. As the senator of a state with over 1,000 miles of shoreline, it is imperative that the Coast Guard have the resources, equipment and funding it needs to perform its duties.
"I support the provisions of the Coast Guard Authorization Act that would allow the Coast Guard to meet their charge of being "Always Ready." Unfortunately, I cannot support the Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA), which has been added as a poison pill to the Coast Guard Authorization Act. The provisions in VIDA are detrimental to California's water ways and would bar California from setting strong standards necessary to protect our State waters.
"I fully stand by the brave and dedicated men and women of the United States Coast Guard and look forward to continuing to support them with the resources they need to protect our country, our people, and our waters."
