Harris Statement on San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) released the following statement today on the passing of San Francisco Public Defender Jeff Adachi:

“I was shocked and deeply saddened last night to learn of the passing of my friend Jeff Adachi. Jeff was a national leader in advocating for the rights of the accused and due process, an outspoken fighter for justice and police accountability, and a fierce and talented advocate for his clients.

“In the 30 years I knew him, I always admired his commitment to his constituents and to the ideals of our nation and our justice system. In our last conversation a week ago, he remained as committed as ever to those promises. Jeff never stopped working for a justice system that provided equal dignity and never stopped believing in our power to make it better. It is now on all of us to continue that work.

“My deep sympathies go out to his wife, Matsuko, his daughter, Lauren, his friends and family, and the people of San Francisco whose hearts are heavy today.”
