Harris Statement on EPA Decision to Weaken Clean Car Standards

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris released the following statement today on the Environmental Protection Agency’s decision to target California by weakening vehicle emissions standards. Last year, Harris pressed EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt on upholding California’s Motor Vehicle Pollution standards at his confirmation hearing. Harris cited Pruitt’s refusal to commit to upholding California’s motor vehicle pollution standards among her reasons for voting against his nomination.

“For generations, California has led the fight in our nation’s efforts to combat air pollution with our vehicle emission standards leading the way. These standards have been essential to the reduction of dangerous emissions from our cars and trucks that threaten everyone’s right to breathe clean air. These standards have also saved people money at the pump, protected the health of our planet and our children, and sparked innovation that keeps America competitive in the global economy.

“This administration’s decision to place another target on California’s back will be met with a fight.”
