Harris Statement on DHS’ Anti-Immigrant CIS Ombudsman Appointment

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris, a member of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, released the following statement about the appointment of Julie Kirchner as the Citizenship and Immigration Services (CIS) Ombudsman. Kirchner is the former Executive Director of the Federation for American Immigration Reform, an anti-immigrant policy center.

"Immigrants are critical to the success of our communities and our country. The appointment of Julie Kirchner, a supporter of extreme anti-immigrant policies such as ending automatic citizenship for those born here, demonstrates she does not understand that. Additionally, Ms. Kirchner's work on behalf of an organization classified by the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-immigrant hate group should disqualify her from leading an office that supports immigrants in need. I continue to be deeply concerned by this Administration's immigration policies that threaten public safety and our economy. I will continue to use all the levers at my disposal to provide vigorous oversight of this Department."
