Harris Demands Hearing on Unidentified Federal Agents in American Cities

Full Video of Harris’ Remarks

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris (D-CA) on Wednesday in a Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee (HSGAC) meeting demanded a hearing on the unidentified federal agents that have been deployed to American cities by President Trump. In her remarks, Harris explains that leaders of many cities and states are not requesting this kind of federal presence and can handle managing their constituents on their own. Harris stresses the serious concern of unidentified law enforcement policing civil protests.

Key Excerpt:

  • To my knowledge, not one of those mayors or governors has requested that and in fact, they have said they don't want that kind of presence— that they are able to manage safety and public safety with their own police departments and do not want interference from federal agents who are not identifying the agency for which they work and are wearing camouflage, which are the uniforms of our soldiers when we send them to war.

A full transcript of Harris’ remarks can be found below:

HARRIS: Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I join with Senator Hassan in requesting that hearing and that it occur as soon as possible. What we've been hearing in the last day is that the President intends to send federal officers to Chicago, to Oakland, to Detroit, to Baltimore. And I know the people of my state are very concerned about that, because to my knowledge, not one of those mayors or governors has requested that and in fact, they have said they don't want that kind of presence— that they are able to manage safety and public safety with their own police departments and do not want interference from federal agents who are not identifying the agency for which they work and are wearing camouflage, which are the uniforms of our soldiers when we send them to war. And for that reason, I would not only join Senator Hasson, but ask that we have that hearing immediately and certainly before any more federal agents are deployed to American cities where there has been civil protesting that is being managed by the executive leadership of those cities and those states.
