WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Kamala D. Harris, a member of the Committee on the Environment and Public Works, released the following statement today on the nomination of Oklahoma Attorney General Scott Pruitt to be Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency:
"Clean air and clean water are essential to healthy children, safe communities, and a sustainable economy with good paying jobs. I carefully reviewed Attorney General Scott Pruitt’s nomination process, and it’s fundamentally clear that if confirmed, he would roll back environmental protections and side with polluters and corporations, instead of families. That is why I will oppose his nomination.
“California is a recognized leader on clean energy development and global effort to combat climate change. I gave Mr. Pruitt the opportunity to support that leadership, but his responses came up short. During his hearing, I asked multiple times if he would uphold California’s motor vehicle pollution standards and each time he shied away from that guarantee. Mr. Pruitt also has a pattern of placing the interests of polluters and wealthy campaign contributors over his constituents. Furthermore, Mr. Pruitt’s unwillingness to recuse himself from his own lawsuits against the EPA would do nothing to improve this Administration’s already rampant reputation of conflicts of interest that allow the wealthy and corporations to make the rules.
“With Mr. Pruitt at the helm of the EPA, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the land where we live, will be endangered. For the future of California, I will vote no.”
